Nestled between the Blue Ridge and Smokey mountains, Asheville is a great place to visit and an even better place to live. On a per-capita basis, Asheville has more craft breweries than anywhere else in the U.S. Asheville is known for its thriving arts and music community, scenic hiking trails, and the Biltmore Estate. In terms of climate, Asheville tops out in the mid-80s during the summer and winter lows dip down into the 20s.
The cost of living in Asheville is consistent with the national average. If you’re coming from an area with a low cost of living, Asheville could put a strain on your budget. Conversely, if you live in an area with a high cost of living such as upper Manhattan, you will find Asheville very affordable.
Asheville does not fare well in terms of crime statistics. On a per-capita basis, Asheville is worse than the national average. It’s not as dangerous as Detroit or East St. Louis, but neither is it as safe as Kennebunkport, Maine or Burlington, Connecticut.
No discussion of Asheville would be complete without a mention of the Biltmore Estate. Built in 1890 by George Washington Vanderbilt, this 180,000 square foot mansion is the largest privately-owned residence in the nation. The enormous structure is situated on 8,000 acres of land and is still owned by the Vanderbilt family. The Biltmore Estate is a National Historic Landmark that draws more than 1 million visitors each year.
